Gardening Page

I am working on starting a home based business selling heirloom / organic seeds for vegetables, herbs and flowers. I also plan on stocking transplants, along with selling custom built planting containers, utilizing the “Square Foot Gardening” technique.  My first attempt at growing veggies was planted in this method. Having no prior gardening experience, it was allot of fun, with minimal effort!. This biz is primarily for local folks surrounding Battle Creek, MI. For those interested in purchasing seeds / transplants directly, here is the place!:

Seed Savers Exchange. Below is an exerpt from SSE, full definition here:

“What are Heirlooms? SSE defines an heirloom as any garden plant that has a history of being passed down within a family, just like pieces of heirloom jewelry or furniture. Some companies have tried to create definitions based on date, such as anything older than 50 years.”

This site / blog has been created to see if there would be enough support from the surrounding comminty to proceed with the project.

My focus for actual planting is the Square Foot Gardening method, but people can plant any way they desire.

The main thing people may balk at is the cost of the seed packets. Depending on the variety, a packet of 25 heirloom tomato seeds can cost $2.75, compared to less than a dollar for commercial seeds. Even if only 5 plants grew from this packet, the cost of the plant is only .50 cents for a basket full of more nutritious tomatoes, even over commercial seeds / transplants. If a person were inclined to do so, they could save some seeds from the plants they just grew, and not have to purchase any seeds the following season, or EVER! Just save seeds from each season! It just depends on how much effort a person desires to exert, which is mainly time, little sweat (unless it’s hot outside!).

I will be building Square Foot Gardening boxes for sale, in a variety of sizes / prices and materials, from economy priced wood to Cedar, and recycled plastic lumber. A person could build their own boxes from plans / ideas in the Square Foot Gardening book, or buy kits directly from the Square Foot Gardening organization. It matters not to me where people get their items. My primary goal is to help people grow their own food!

Please leave comments below so I can guage if I should continue with starting this business!
